Nada Al-Maddah Saudi Gazette MAKKAH – Inspectors from the Makkah mayoralty raided on Saturday morning a warehouse for food located in the basement of a mega mall in Makkah's Al-Shuhada district. The basement was supposed to be a car park. The municipal authorities took action after complaints about a bad smell coming from the location, which turned out to be a warehouse for storing food for a well-known restaurant in the city. Muhsin Ali, director of the markets department at the mayoralty, said: “The location was unhygienic. There were also leaking waste water and rodents.” He confirmed that the inspectors seized all the food and other items at the location and destroyed them immediately. The quantity of seized foodstuffs included 300 kg of fat stored improperly, 200 kg of rotten green pepper salad, 20 cartons of expired hummus, six metal vessels of olive oil, one large bag of rice and 10 kg of fish fillets in addition to damaged cooking and grilling utensils. Dr. Muhammad Hashim Futawi, Director General of Environmental Health at the Makkah Mayoralty, said there are inspection tours involving inspectors from his department and sub-municipalities round the clock to safeguard pilgrims' health.
