The National Water Company (NWC) in partnership with Unilever has launched a new water conservation campaign that recommends all society members to shower in just four minutes. A study conducted by the company revealed that the average person in Saudi Arabia showers for around 12 to 14 minutes, which wastes 200 liters of water. That is a whole lot of water to be lost down the drain, and a simple lifestyle change of reducing the time spent in the shower can save a good deal of world's precious resource. The four-minute shower campaign is part of the company's programs of social responsibility to help raise social awareness of the importance of water and educate the public on easy-to-follow conservation methods. By taking a shower in only four minutes, each person saves 130 liters of water, meaning a family with five members will save up to 650 liters and 12 families living in a large apartment building will save 7,800 liters of water. The Executive Director for Public Relations at the NWC, Khalid Abdulaziz Almusaibih, said: “This new and innovative campaign will last for one month. It aims to create heightened awareness among the community about the threat of water scarcity, and also to offer the average consumer feasible tips that each individual can implement in his/her home to help preserve water. The recommendations to avoid wasting water actually originated from our religion, Islam, and our goal is to decrease water consumption in the Kingdom by the average user by 20 percent. Using 20 percent less water than you normally do will significantly lower your water bill, help you save money, and prevent the common water shortages that occur quite frequently.” Omar Batayyah, Marketing Manager at Unilever and co-organizer of the campaign said educational booths and water conservation workshops will be on display in a number of shopping centers in the Kingdom's major cities all month long. Over 1.5 million different awareness tools will be distributed to the general public during the campaign, such as informational brochures, newsletters, and hourglasses (or sand timers) that are set at exactly four minutes to make it easier to time your shower, Batayyah added. So,don't take long, relaxing warm baths, take a quick four-minute shower.
