JEDDAH – At 12:00 noon Wednesday, 59 sirens went off in several locations of Jeddah to test flood alarms warning the public against impending danger. The sirens were set up in the most vulnerable areas of the city. Schools in these areas were evacuated as part of the drill. Maj. Gen. Jameel Arbaeen, Director of Civil Defense in the Makkah region, said the trial was aimed at making citizens and expatriate residents familiar with the sounds of the siren. The siren has three tones: a high-and-low-pitch tone indicating imminent danger, an intermittent high-pitch tone indicating existing danger and a continuous high-pitch tone indicating the end of danger alert. Maj. Gen. Arbaeen visited Civil Defense units to check their preparedness to deal with emergency cases. “We're going to test the sirens again to make sure they work properly.” He said the sirens were installed in 33 Jeddah neighborhoods, including 19 in Al-Assala valley, 9 at Umm Al-Khair Dam, 12 at Qaws valley, 15 at Mathoob valley and 4 at Ghulail valley.
