JEDDAH — Inspectors from the Jeddah Mayoralty raided a ramshackle house in the Al-Handawyia neighborhood where they found huge quantities of rotten food and meat unfit for human consumption. All the workers there were illegal residents, local media reports said Monday. In addition, the inspectors found dozens of dead rats in the toilets and lots of insects near the places where they cooked and prepared food. The inspectors received reports of the workers who had turned the house into a kitchen where they prepared food to be sold to restaurants. After raiding the house the inspectors along with police officers filed a report and destroyed the cooked food and rotten meat. In their testimonies the workers admitted they used to supply prepared food to a number of restaurants. Ayed Mashbab Saeed, head of the Al-Balad Municipality, said inspectors make periodic tours of restaurants, coffee houses and cafeterias to ensure adherence to hygiene rules. They also ensure that the workers in these places have health cards proving they are medically fit and disease-free. — SG
