The United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, that instantly killed an estimated 66,000 people in the first use of a nuclear weapon in warfare. Half a century later, some 50,000 gathered in Hiroshima for a memorial service to mark the 50th anniversary of the tragedy at the city's Peace Park, which was built directly below the point where the bomb exploded. __
