Kendrick lifts Angels over White Sox 6-5
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 06 - 08 - 2012

Toronto Blue Jays base runner Moises Sierra (L) is tagged out by Oakland Athletics catcher George Kottaras during the eleventh inning of their game in Oakland Saturday. — ReutersCHICAGO — Albert Pujols homered again and Howie Kendrick hit a go-ahead single in the 10th inning that sent the Los Angeles Angels over the White Sox 6-5.
Alberto Callaspo doubled with two outs in the 10th off Matt Thornton (4-7) and scored on Kendrick's single. The Angels ended their three-game losing streak.
Kevin Youkilis homered twice for the White Sox. A.J. Pierzynski had a solo shot for the AL Central leaders.
Pujols' 24th home run was his sixth in his last five games. Mike Trout singled twice, scored two runs and scaled the wall in left-center field to rob Gordon Beckham of a home run. Kevin Jepsen (2-1) worked a scoreless ninth. Ernesto Frieri pitched the 10th for his 13th save in 14 chances.
Rangers 4, Royals 2: Josh Hamilton drove in two runs, Scott Feldman won his sixth straight decision and Texas defeated Kansas City for its fourth victory in a row.
Feldman (6-6) worked into the eighth inning and became the first pitcher in 29 years to win six consecutive decisions after starting the season 0-6. Doyle Alexander did it in 1983 with the Yankees and Blue Jays.
Hamilton, who leads the majors with 90 RBIs, hit an opposite-field single in the third inning to score Ian Kinsler and Elvis Andrus. Mike Olt, called up Thursday from Double-A Frisco, added two RBIs for the AL West leaders.
With closer Joe Nathan unavailable, Alexi Ogando pitched around two singles in the ninth to earn his third save.
Kansas City lost for the 23rd time in 32 games. Royals rookie Will Smith (2-4) gave up eight hits over 5 2-3 innings in losing his third straight start.
Tigers 6, Indians 1: Doug Fister retired his first 17 batters and then settled for a four-hitter in Detroit's victory over fading Cleveland.
Fister's bid for a perfect game was broken up with two outs in the sixth inning when Ezequiel Carrera tripled over Austin Jackson's head in center field. Fister (6-7) finished with six strikeouts but lost his chance at his first career shutout when Carrera tripled again in the ninth and scored on a groundout.
Ubaldo Jimenez (8-11) allowed six runs and seven hits in 5 1-3 innings for the Indians, who have lost eight consecutive games. It's their longest skid since dropping 11 straight in September 2009.
Brennan Boesch and Jhonny Peralta each hit a double and a triple for the Tigers.
It was Fister's first complete game since July 2 last season, when he was with Seattle.
Blue Jays 3, Athletics 1 (11 innings): David Cooper hit a tying homer in the ninth inning and Edwin Encarnacion scored on catcher George Kottaras' throwing error in the 11th, lifting Toronto over Oakland.
The Blue Jays ended a six-game skid a day after they lost to the A's 5-4 in 15 innings.
Cooper hit a solo homer off Ryan Cook with one out in the ninth. Cook gave up a tying, three-run shot in the ninth Friday.
Orioles 4, Rays 0: Wei-Yin Chen allowed five hits in seven innings, Chris Davis had two RBIs and Baltimore beat the Tampa Bay Rays.
Chen (10-6) improved to 4-1 in his past six road starts. Pedro Strop gave up a single in the eighth and Jim Johnson completed the six-hitter.
Matt Wieters and Nick Markakis each had an RBI single for the Orioles, who were 0 for 22 with runners in scoring position during their previous two games.
In other games it was: Seattle 1, NY Yankees 0; and Minnesota 6, Boston 4. — Agencies
