PRESTON — Two prisoners were caught trying to escape from their cell in a Shawshank Redemption-style breakout. The pair used plastic knives and forks and a chair leg to make a 6ft by 4ft hole, then hid it from view behind furniture and posters, just like in the movie. But prison officers discovered the hole, which led into an old chimney shaft at Preston Prison, Lancs. Last night a Prison Service spokesman said: “Staff were alerted to damage to a cell. Following a police investigation, two men have been charged with attempting to escape from a prison.” A source said: “We've all seen Shawshank but you never expect to find a real live prison break like that in your own jail.” In the 1994 film, Andy Dufresne, played by Tim Robbins, escapes from jail after digging a hole in his cell wall and covering it with posters of movie stars. — Agencies
