Biggs escaped in 1965 after serving just 15 months by scaling the prison wall on a rope-ladder and jumping onto a mattress in the back of a waiting furniture van. He used his share of the loot to pay for plastic surgery and papers for a passage to Australia where he returned to his old job of carpenter and decorator. His playboy lifestyle soon attracted the attention of the authorities and was forced to move to Brazil where he lived from 1970. __
