The head of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) welcomed the arrest of former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic on charges of war crimes. In a Wednesday statement, Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu said the arrest is a major step to “deliver justice” to Bosnian Muslims. According to the OIC website, the organization is a collective body of 57 states representing the “collective voice of the Muslim world and ensuring to safeguard and project the interests of the Muslim world in the spirit of promoting international peace.” Ihsanoglu said the Monday arrest will soon be followed by the apprehension of other indicted war criminals in former Yugoslavia and a new era of enduring reconciliation, peaceful coexistence and security for the people of the Balkan region. Last week, Ihsanoglu slammed the International Criminal Court prosecutor for indicting and seeking the arrest of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on charges of genocide and war crimes in Darfur.
