Nationals win thriller over Phillies
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 06 - 05 - 2012

Washington's Wilson Ramos delivered an RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Nationals a 4-3 comeback victory over the Philadelphia Phillies Friday.
Steve Lombardozzi started the winning rally against Michael Schwimer (0-1) by singling with two outs, and 19-year-old Bryce Harper — the youngest player in the majors — drew his third walk of the game before Jayson Werth also walked to load the bases.
That brought up Ramos, who drove in Lombardozzi.
Ryan Perry (1-0), Washington's sixth pitcher, earned the win. He pitched a perfect 11th, getting the No. 3-4-5 hitters on groundouts.
Cubs 5, Dodgers 4: In Chicago, Paul Maholm allowed only one run in six crisp innings to lead Chicago to a tight win over Los Angeles.
Maholm (3-2) has won his past three outings, giving up just three runs over 18 1-3 innings during the streak.
David DeJesus and Alfonso Soriano each had three hits for the Cubs.
Chad Billingsley (2-2) gave up four runs in six innings for the Dodgers.
Diamondbacks 5, Mets 4: In New York, Cody Ransom hit a two-run homer and a go-ahead single in the eighth inning to help Arizona hand New York its fourth straight loss.
Paul Goldschmidt hit a tying, two-run double off Jon Rauch (3-1) and Ransom followed with an RBI single.
The Mets got runners on first and third in the bottom of the eighth but Diamondbacks reliever Brad Ziegler (1-1) induced a lineout to end the threat. J.J. Putz worked a perfect ninth for his sixth save, a day after blowing a save opportunity against Washington.
Reds 6, Pirates 1: In Pittsburgh, Johnny Cueto pitched his first complete game of the season and remained unbeaten as Cincinnati beat Pittsburgh.
Cueto (4-0) did not issue a walk while lowering his season ERA to 1.32.
Zack Cozart and Drew Stubbs homered on consecutive pitches in the seventh inning off Pittsburgh starter Kevin Correia (1-2) to give Cincinnati plenty of breathing room.
Astros 5, Cardinals 4: Jose Altuve put the Houston Astros on top with a three-run homer in the second inning and they held on for a 5-4 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.
The win is the fourth straight for the Astros and the second consecutive loss for the National League Central-leading Cardinals.
Braves 9, Rockies 8 (11 innings): Eric Hinske had four hits, including a tiebreaking two-run homer in the 11th inning, and the Atlanta Braves beat the Colorado Rockies 9-8.
After pinch hitter Tyler Pastornicky singled to start the 11th, Hinske sent a 94-mph fastball from Edgmer Escalona (0-1) into the Rockies' bullpen for his first homer of the season.
In other games it was: Atlanta 9, Colorado 8 (11 innings); Milwaukee 6, San Francisco 4.
