Pictures of drug smugglers and traffickers published Saturday by a local daily revealed the new methods they are adopting to smuggle narcotics into the Kingdom. According to business daily Al-Eqtisadiah, the smugglers are exploiting wives and children to deliver drugs to various regions and towns. It said some are even using people with disabilities or dressing up in Abayas to avoid suspicion of their illegal operations. Security forces have been vigilant and not been so easy to deceive. Maj. Gen. Mansour Al-Turki, spokesman of the Ministry of Interior, told a press conference the story of a smuggler who used his family in five drug-trafficking operations. “Five times the smuggler used his wife and children in his heinous operations but the security men arrested him and confiscated the quantities of drugs with him,” he said. Al-Turki pointed out that his men were fully aware of all the methods the smugglers might use in distributing narcotics. The spokesman also made clear the legal position with regards the family members caught in the crossfire in the war on drugs. “We cannot hold the family members responsible unless they are proven to be guilty,” he said.
