A Saudi woman has been waiting six years for her cases related to alimony and compensation for moral damages to be resolved in the Riyadh High Court. Umm Abdul Aziz appealed to the authorities to help her obtain her rights guaranteed in Islam. She said she is raising her son alone without support from her former husband. She was quoted Wednesday by Al-Hayat newspaper as saying that she wanted compensation for her ex-husband humiliating and blackmailing her. The General Shariah Court in Riyadh in 2007 granted her a faskh (rescission) verdict but without compensation. Umm Abdul Aziz said she won the case because she had the necessary documents and evidence. She sued her ex-husband six years ago at the District Court in Riyadh, accusing him of falsifying evidence and fabricating stories to damage her reputation including accusing her of adultery and moral decadence. She alleged that he reported the birth of his son to the authorities only after his family and relatives pressured him to do so. She added that she fought hard to get a birth certificate for her son and to register him with the Civil Status. She said the case has been pending for so long because her ex-husband has not attended one court session. She said that 30 days after the verdict was passed by the court for him to pay alimony, he was still allowed to illegally challenge the verdict.
