Despite the recent agreement signed by the Kingdom and Iraq on the extradition of prisoners, Saudi prisoners in Iraq are facing tough conditions, a human rights official has said. Two Saudi prisoners have gone on a hunger strike to protest against mistreatment and unjust trials, said a source from the National Society for Human Rights (NSHR), Al-Hayat newspaper reported Tuesday. The Human Rights Commission has urged Iraq's human rights bodies to look into the complaints of Saudi prisoners Abdullah Azam and Mazen Al-Mehwal who are on a hunger strike at Al-Kazmia Prison. The Saudis say they are not being treated the way other Arab nationals are at the prison. A human rights official said he hoped matters to be solved amicably and that the extradition of prisoners takes place soon. Three out of the 108 Saudi prisoners currently in Iraq have been sentenced to death.
