A Ministry of Health committee is to determine the compensation for a female Saudi doctor who lost two fetuses after a medical mistake during an operation. The doctor is seeking SR500,000 for the loss of her unborn children and for problems with sexual intercourse after the procedure, it was reported in a section of the Arabic press on Friday. She was originally pregnant with five fetuses, but three died in her womb. The operation was to remove the dead fetuses. The committee will consider the degree of damage before deciding on the compensation. Dr. Sami Badawood, Jeddah Health Affairs Director, said: “After investigation, it has become clear that the female doctor was a victim of a medical error.” Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Ojairi, Chairman of the Jeddah Medical Commission, said the doctor had agreed to abort three dead fetuses and keep two who were still alive; however, the medical error cost her the lives of all fetuses and made it difficult for her to have sexual intercourse with her husband, Al-Ojairi pointed out. Mistakes are made in 26 percent of birth operations in Jeddah, Al-Ojairi added.
