The Saudi Telecom Co. (STC) has been invited to be a member of the UN-sponsored Broadband Commission and will send Dr. Saad Bin Dhafer Al-Qatani, CEO of the STC Group, to sit on the Commission. The invitation was sent by Dr. Hamadoun Toure, Secretary General of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and Irina Bokova, the commission's co-president and Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The invitation shows the STC Group's leadership and reputation as a provider and operator of broadband services in the region. STC Group enjoys the edge of being ahead of its rivals in telecommunications technology and broadband services in the Middle East. The Commission was established by the UN 2010 to support efforts of telecommunications companies to realize the 3rd millennium development targets in broadband services. It authorized the ITU and UNESCO to steer its efforts in promoting broadband services in the fields of education, finance and social health, in accordance with the requests of the UN Secretary General. The UN-sponsored broadband body focuses on developing infrastructure for broadband services, particularly in the developing countries. The Commission is composed of world-renowned business leaders such as CEO's big telecom companies' decision makers, politicians, academics and representatives of specialized agencies.
