Saudi Gazette It is very common to hear that a patient has been diagnosed incorrectly or has been given the wrong medicine for a disease, which at times costs a person his/her life. Now, this obviously couldn't be intentional, but perhaps could be because of negligence or carelessness. Although, such mistakes have been largely witnessed in the Kingdom, the region which has the lowest numbers of physicians' medical mistakes is Al-Ahsa. The Director of Health Affairs in Al-Ahsa, Dr. Abdulmohsen Bin Nasser Al-Molhem, said, “Data collected shows that in the past one year the number of medical mistakes reported in Al-Ahsa was only 39 cases. That is the lowest number of medical mistakes reported in the Kingdom, as compared to another city which is said to have recorded 500 medical mistakes in the same time period. Al-Ahsa region is currently on the horizon of making several expansions and improvements in our healthcare system, which includes creating 300-patient beds in Prince Saud Bin Jalwi Hospital, 200 beds in Al-Faisaliyah District Hospital, 500 beds in Al-Ahsa General Hospital, and 500 beds in the Maternity and Children's Hospital.” In an open meeting with healthcare administrators and personnel who work in both government and private hospitals in Al-Ahsa, Al-Molhem said that the healthcare directorate in the region will soon provide Muslim scholars to visit patients in the intensive care units of various hospitals and recite some verses from the Holy Qur'an that pertain to healing. Recitals of these verses help in the speedy recovery of the patients, enhances faith in Allah and spreads a feeling of patience, peace and contentment. Scientific researchers have documented immense benefits of meditation and relaxing; melodious recitation of the Holy Qur'an heals ones body, mind, and soul. Proven benefits include lowered blood pressure, decreased heart and respiratory rate, increased blood flow and improved circulation, and a heightened immune response. The unseen benefits may be immeasurable but they do have a positive influence on the recovery process, such as feeling spiritually uplifted, at ease, and maintaining a bright attitude. The effects of the psyche and the mind on the physical body should not be overlooked by the physicians. The brain has a very powerful influence on the body and is demonstrated beautifully in this excerpt that was taken from the book Love, Medicine, and Miracles by Dr. Bernie Siegel. “One of my cancer patients was undergoing rigorous chemotherapy treatments and she always used to throw up immediately after her chemotherapy. She told me that her husband always used to have a bag ready for her to throw up in as she got into the car. But one day she opened the bag and found a dozen roses. She never again threw up after the chemotherapy.” __
