An unidentified gunman shot dead an official of the Saudi Arabian embassy in Bangladesh early Tuesday, police said, the first such killing of a diplomat in the country. Khalaf Al-Ali, 45, head of the Citizens' Affairs unit of the Saudi Embassy in Dhaka, was shot once and was found dead in the Gulshan area in the capital, Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Gulshan Police Station, told The Daily Star. “One of our diplomatic staff was killed near his house in Gulshan this morning. This is sad,” United News of Bangladesh quoted Saudi Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr. Abdullah Al-Bussairy as saying. “We are investigating the incident and trying to get details including the motive of the killing and identify the killer,” police officer Kamrul Hasan said. The killers might have shot the Saudi official somewhere else and dumped his body on the road in Gulshan, Khandker Lutful Kabir, deputy commissioner of Gulshan Division, told The Daily Star. “Police did not see any sign of blood at the place the body was found,” he said. Police said they first came to know about the killing from a security guard.
