The Saudi Red Crescent Authority (SRCA) has begun operating motorcycle ambulances in Makkah during the holy month of Ramadan, specifically in the area near the Grand Mosque. SRCA spokesman Abdulaziz Badoman said these ambulances are operated during Ramadan and in Haj season to ensure patients and the injured get faster access to medical treatment. These vehicles can respond to a medical emergency much faster than a van in heavy traffic, maximizing the chances of survival for someone in critical condition. The vehicle is supplied with first aid kit and an small oxygen cylinder. The paramedics operating the vehicles are trained to respond to all types of emergency cases. They are trained to take care of the patient on site until the arrival of a proper ambulance. The authority operates motorcycles in the Haram area, which work round-the-clock. The paramedics have so far treated 175 cases including 44 traffic accidents, 20 respiratory, 5 cardiac and 106 other cases. — By Badea Abu Al-Naja
