Traffic Police Department in the Eastern Province has installed more Saher cameras, the automated system for the management of traffic via e-systems, on major streets and expressways in the province in an effort to monitor traffic violators, particularly those who are speeding and not observing traffic signals. Most of the Saher digital cameras have been mounted on signal lights at traffic intersections in Al-Khobar, Dammam, Dhahran, and the Dammam-Jubail highway. Traffic Police officials said the department has removed most of the mobile units mounted with Saher cameras. Many of the mobile Saher units have been vandalized, prompting their withdrawal. The installation of more Saher units is being complemented with a public information drive, traffic officers said. Billboards urging citizens and motorists to observe traffic rules and road courtesy have been set up on major roads and atop bridges. Flashing neon signs indicating the maximum speeds have been installed along the Dammam-Khobar Expressway, King Abdullah Expressway in Khobar, Dammam-Jubail Expressway, and on major roads in Dammam and Al-Khobar. Traffic officials said the campaign against violators will be further intensified, citing the negative results of vehicular accidents. Statistics of the Traffic Police Department, Ministry of Interior, show that there are nine million recorded traffic violations annually, 18 deaths per day due to vehicular accidents, and an annual SR13 million loss of property. __
