Some 2,000 university students from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) and other colleges in the Eastern Province are being mobilized to participate in the annual Volunteering Day to be held from 8 A.M. to 5 P.M on February 16. The Volunteering Day is held by students to render community services. It is held annually and supported by the region's business community, non-government organizations, and government agencies. The student volunteers will be divided into groups to engage in diverse activities during the day. Their activities will include helping poor families by giving them food and furniture; maintaining public utilities by painting buildings, cleaning and planting trees and flowers in public parks; cleaning beaches; supporting orphans and children from low-income families in primary and intermediate schools through recreational, educational, and skills developing programs; entertaining senior citizens; visiting handicapped and special needs people in hospitals and providing entertainment for prisoners. The institutions to be visited are social care homes in Dammam and Al-Khobar, the Al-Amal Hospital in Dammam, a rehabilitation center for drug-dependent individuals, primary and secondary schools, neighborhood mosques, and public utilities. A public safety program will also be held in schools in cooperation with traffic police who will organize a lecture on the negative aspects of driving by unlicensed young drivers. __
