Over 700 participants with various disabilities from 20 specialized centers in Jeddah and Makkah will take part in "Let's Walk the Walk Together 5" Marathon organized by the Help Center. The marathon aims to foster greater awareness and activism among the community toward the talents of people with disabilities. Its purpose is to give the young athletes an opportunity to display their capabilities. The marathon will start at the intersection of Malik Road (Prince Naif Road) and end near Al-Nawras Roundabout from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Thursday, Jan. 5. Participants will take part in one of three categories. The first category is the 1km run (1000m) for athletes over 16 years. The second category is the 1km (1000m) walk/run for athletes over 9 years. The third category is the 500m walk for athletes under 9 years, the physically disabled and babies with caregivers. The three categories will be divided into seven different contests. About 1800 people along with volunteer schools/groups re expected to attend the event. Thirteen boys from the Help Center's Desert Gazelles sports team will go around corporations asking for pledges to support their athletic abilities at the marathon. By sponsoring an amount per meter, 20 percent of the proceeds will go to the Help Center or a charity of their choice and the athlete will get to keep the rest! ‘Let's Walk the Walk Together 5' Marathon relies on the generosity and support of local companies and government entities. Marathons have great physical, mental, spiritual and social benefits and also offer an arena for people with disabilities to socially interact and maximize their potential.
