Ronaldo hat trick extends Real lead
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 30 - 10 - 2016

MADRID — Cristiano Ronaldo returned to goal-scoring form with his first hat trick of the season and also missed a penalty as Real Madrid extended its lead at the top of La Liga with a 4-1 win at Alaves Saturday.
Ronaldo's wayward form in recent weeks had come under the spotlight — he was booed by Real fans after missing one chance recently — but he turned the game around after Deyverson had put Alaves into a shock early lead.
Ronaldo leveled from the penalty spot before his deflected effort put Madrid ahead at the break.
The Portuguese saw another penalty saved 12 minutes from time, but wasn't to be denied when he slammed home Marcelo's cut-back after Alvaro Morata's cushioned lob had made the game safe.
Real now leads Sevilla by three points at the top of the table and Barcelona by five.
"We are always going to demand goals from Cristiano, but he was good in all aspects," said Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane.
Real's unbeaten run stretches to 26 matches, but its defensive struggles continued in Vitoria as Zidane's men got off to the worst possible start when Deyverson pounced on an error from goalkeeper Keylor Navas to slot Alaves into a seventh-minute lead.
Earlier, Sevilla's struggles away from home continued in a 1-1 draw at Sporting Gijon.
Sevilla snapped a 22-game winless streak on the road in their last away league game at Leganes and got off to the perfect start in Asturias when Luciano Vietto raced onto Wissam Ben Yedder's flick-on to dink home his fourth goal of the season.
Sporting is now without a win in seven matches, but moved out of the relegation zone as Moi Gomez volleyed home Roberto Canella's cross for a share of the points.
Lewandowski, Robben dazzle
Robert Lewandowski and Arjen Robben combined for all three goals as Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich eased to an impressive 3-1 victory for its second win over Augsburg this week.
Having also beaten its Bavarian neighbor by the same margin Wednesday at home in the German Cup, Bayern completed the double thanks to Robben's outstanding display with two assists and a goal.
Bayern took the lead at Augsburg's WWK Arena when Robben's pass found Lewandowski unmarked in the area to rifle home his first Bundesliga goal for six weeks on 19 minutes.
The Poland hot-shot returned the favor two minutes later.
His shot was parried by Augsburg goalkeeper Marvin Hitz, but Lewandowski spotted Robben unmarked and the Dutchman drilled home the pass.
Just after the break, Robben snapped up a disastrous pass from Augsburg's Gojko Kacar to thread a pass for Lewandowski to fire home on 48 minutes for his seventh goal in nine league games.
Just as they had done in the cup on Wednesday, Augsburg pulled a goal back when Koo Ja-Cheol tapped home Daniel Baier's pass after Bayern center-back Mats Hummels failed to clear the danger on 67 minutes.
Robben came off with 14 minutes to go, but Ancelotti said he should be available to play at Eindhoven in the Champions League Tuesday.
This was Augsburg's third straight loss in all competitions to leave it just above the relegation places.
Munich is two points clear in the table, but second-placed Leipzig kept up the pressure with a 2-0 win at Darmstadt as Marcel Sabitzer scored both goals.
Leipzig is nine games unbeaten on its debut season in Germany's top flight — just one short of the record for a promoted team.
Freiburg is up to seventh after its 3-1 win at Werder Bremen thanks to goals by Maximilian Philipp, a Vincenzo Grifo penalty and a strike by Albanian international Amir Abrashi.
Bayer Leverkusen warmed up for Wednesday's away Champions League match at Tottenham Hotspur with a 2-1 comeback win at VfL Wolfsburg, which remains in the relegation places.
Yunus Malli and Levin Oztunali scored in Mainz's 2-0 over second-from-bottom Ingolstadt, which had Max Christiansen sent off late on for a second yellow card.
