Makkah The people of some border cities of the Kingdom have lost something important from their normal lives. It has become difficult for them to reach some of the local natural sites to break the harsh routine and enjoy life. They have lost a lot due to the protocols of the cities that are on the border. Provinces such as Najran and Jazan are right on the Kingdom's southern border. I understand that some sacrifices must be made for the greater good of the nation. I understand certain decisions to ensure national security and I appreciate all official efforts exerted to achieve these goals. Given the circumstances, it is to be expected that the people of the cities at the border will have to endure difficult conditions. However, I find it difficult to understand why there is no money spent or effort made on providing recreation facilities in these cities. People need parks and natural places to go to in order to escape the dreary routine of their life. Parks are an affordable place for people to hold their social gatherings and special occasions. I do not know who to blame and who to hold responsible. There hasn't been any effort in improving or maintaining natural sites in these cities. Are the municipalities responsible for this negligence? Are they at fault for not thinking out of the box and giving the people what they need? The municipalities were probably preoccupied with renovating the streets and roads and have forgotten about the soul of the people and their psychological well being. They have neglected some essential aspects needed for human development. Yes, development is not only skyscrapers and assets. I want to ask some questions here: Have the municipalities been truly successful in developing human life? Have they created alternatives for the natural sites to ensure that the people are happy? I cannot find answers to my questions. I know that many share my sorrow. The absence of natural sites where people can relax and refresh themselves should have been what motivated municipalities. I had also hoped that the people would have some place to escape to from the dire reality of war. The dream may be impossible to achieve, but something which reaps some results is better than nothing. Today we have an entertainment commission: the Ministry of Happiness. We also have the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage, municipalities of ancient cities, municipal councils and trade houses. The people of cities that are on the border are thirsty for recreational programs, libraries and museums.
