RIYADH — A large number of people attended the burial of Khalil Al-Omairini, a retired teacher who was strangled to death inside his apartment in Cairo. According to Egyptian police, the motive behind the murder was theft and five people were arrested, including the building doorman who they believe committed the crime. According to police information, the killer had a previous criminal record, including thefts. Police said he agreed with his friends to carry out the crime and steal valuables and money from the victim. Al-Omairini's partly decomposed body was discovered last Thursday inside his apartment after neighbors complained of a bad smell coming from the apartment. The victim retired two years ago, had not married, and lived with his mother who suffers from Alzheimer's. The victim's friend, Abu Khalif Al-Onaizi, said he was in contact with the victim on social media before the murder. "My friend was a good man and he has a good relationship with his friends at work. He applied for early retirement two years ago and there was a small ceremony for him at school. I believe that the money he had with him was for investment to buy an apartment or a shop. He was also planning to get married soon. The murder was shocking to all of us," he said. Al-Omairini's elder brother said that he was shocked to hear the news, and that he had not informed his mother of the murder because of her condition. "My brother could not defend himself in front of five strong men who attacked him. The doorman made it easy for the other criminals to reach my brother. They beat him up and then strangled him to death before escaping with EGP64,000 and more than SR4,000. My brother was a good man and he was nice to all people around him. The criminals took advantage of his good nature and found him as an easy target, especially that he was living alone in his apartment," he said.
