A brilliant goal by France-born Morgan Betorangal gave Mouloudia Bejaia of Algeria a 1-0 victory over Medeama of Ghana Tuesday and a CAF Confederation Cup semifinals place. The defender-cum-midfielder gained possession just inside the Medeama half, moved forward unchallenged and unleashed a drive that flew over the goalkeeper and into the net on 52 minutes. Bejaia and Medeama shared second place in Group A with eight points each and zero goal differences and the Algerians qualified on the head-to-head rule having drawn 0-0 in Ghana two months ago. The Betorangal match-winner was only the second goal scored by his club in six group matches, the lowest total by a team reaching the last-four of the second-tier African club competition. Stade Malien of Mali and CA Bizertin of Tunisia shared the previous low, scoring three goals each in six matches three seasons ago. Bejaia meets FUS Rabat of Morocco and defending champion Etoile Sahel of Tunisia plays TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the semifinals during September. FUS, shock winner of the 2010 Confederation Cup, won Group B by one point from twice title-holder Etoile after the clubs drew 0-0 in Rabat. Group A winner Mazembe finished with a 3-1 triumph over bottom club Young Africans of Tanzania in Lubumbashi. Jonathan Bolingi put the host ahead with a shot from a tight angle and Zambian Rainford Kalaba added two second-half goals through close-range shots. Burundian Amissi Tambwe fired a free-kick into the net for the visitors 15 minutes from time. Sanchez and Vidal to lead Chile in qualifiers Chile coach Juan Antonio Pizzi named a familiar squad Tuesday for the reigning South American champions' upcoming 2018 World Cup qualifiers. Chile, which beat Argentina on penalties in the Copa America final two months ago to successfully defend its title, currently holds the fourth and final automatic South American qualification spot for the World Cup in Russia. Former Spain international Pizzi named an initial squad of 18 players Tuesday, that included the likes of Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez, Bayern Munich midfielder Arturo Vidal, and goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, who is reportedly on the brink of a move from Barcelona to Manchester City. Five players from the Chilean league will join the squad to bring its numbers up to the usual 23. Paraguay plays host to Chile on Sept. 1, before Bolivia visits Santiago on Sept. 6.
