Burnley stuns Liverpool
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 21 - 08 - 2016

Liverpool was sent spinning to a 2-0 defeat at promoted Burnley in the Premier League Saturday while Chelsea came from behind to win 2-1 at Watford thanks to late goals from Michy Batshuayi and Diego Costa.
Elsewhere, Sergio Aguero and Nolito scored twice apiece as Manchester City won 4-1 at Stoke City to give Pep Guardiola's men their second straight victory, while Champion Leicester City played out a goalless draw against Arsenal.
Sam Vokes and Andre Gray scored first-half goals to put Burnley in command against Liverpool which was a pale shadow of the team that beat Arsenal 4-3 in its opening game of the season last weekend.
"How can I be happy with this?", said Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp. "Everybody needs to be more clinical.
"Burnley deserved to win with a very passionate performance. We have to say it wasn't enough today."
Vokes netted with a rasping shot in the second minute before Gray bagged his first top-flight goal with a crisp low strike from 18 meters.
Etienne Capoue gave Watford a 55th-minute lead against Chelsea after smashing a swerving shot into the top corner of the net.
Substitute Batshuayi equalized in the 80th-minute with his first goal for the club before Costa, who scored a late winner against West Ham United Monday, finished calmly three minutes from time after being found by another sub, Cesc Fabregas.
"I'm pleased to see a reaction from my players," said Chelsea manager Antonio Conte. "This win's very important for us as it gives everyone confidence."
Manchester City was arguably flattered by the 4-1 scoreline at Stoke.
Aguero, who missed two penalties in City's 5-0 Champions League playoff first-leg victory at Steaua Bucharest in midweek, opened the scoring from the spot after Ryan Shawcross impeded Nicolas Otamendi.
The Argentine then doubled his tally after 36 minutes, meeting a sumptuous Kevin De Bruyne free kick to send a fine header into the far corner of the goal.
Stoke fought back when Spanish forward Bojan beat keeper Willy Caballero from the spot but substitute Nolito struck twice late on for Manchester City.
"I am really impressed with the players as human beings and with their performance," said Guardiola.
Leicester City and Arsenal are still searching for their first Premier League win of the season after sharing a 0-0 draw at the King Power Stadium that only came to life during a frenetic final 10 minutes.
Champion Leicester was left fuming after two penalty appeals were denied, with Danny Drinkwater felled by Laurent Koscielny at the end of the first half and substitute Ahmed Musa brought down by Hector Bellerin in the 88th minute.
Arsenal offered more attacking purpose in a tight opening 45 minutes although it did little to trouble Leicester's defensive unit.
The home team was rocked by an injury to debutant Nampalys Mendy in the 53rd minute. Both sides had chances as the game opened up, Jamie Vardy firing over the bar and Kasper Schmeichel making sharp saves from Bellerin and Theo Walcott at the other end.
Victor Wanyama netted in the 83rd minute as Tottenham Hotspur beat Crystal Palace 1-0, while Everton won 2-1 at West Bromwich Albion.
Hull City became the first promoted side since Bolton Wanderers in 2001 to win its opening two matches when it triumphed 2-0 at Swansea City.
Lewandowski hits three
Robert Lewandowski netted a hat trick Friday as holder Bayern Munich brushed past minnow Carl Zeiss Jena with a 5-0 away win in the first round of the German Cup.
Bayern opens the new Bundesliga season next Friday when the defending champion hosts Werder Bremen.
The Bavarian giant is chasing a fifth consecutive German title, with Carlo Ancelotti having succeeded Pep Guardiola as head coach.
Elsewhere, Bundesliga outfit Augsburg won 2-0 at fifth-division team Ravensburg, which had forward Rahman Soyudogru sent off late on.
Lyon wins
In Paris, Alexandre Lacazette made it five goals from two Ligue 1 games this season as his brace of penalties allowed Lyon to beat Caen 2-0 Friday and continue its perfect start to the French campaign.
Lacazette's first penalty came in the 31st minute and he netted again from 12 yards in the fifth minute of added time after an occasionally nervy second half for Lyon at the Parc OL.
The goals gave last season's Ligue 1 runner-up six points from a possible six after Lacazette's hat trick secured a 3-0 win away at promoted Nancy on the opening weekend.
Palace signs Benteke
Belgian international striker Christian Benteke became Crystal Palace's record signing Saturday as the Premier League club paid £27million ($35m) with add-ons to end his unhappy spell at rivals Liverpool.
The 25-year-old — who cost Liverpool £32.5m when he joined from Aston Villa last year but fell out of favor with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp when he replaced Brendan Rodgers — said he was looking forward to moving on.
