Averda to increase recycling in Dubai
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 20 - 08 - 2016

BEGINNING October 2016, the residents, schools, universities and public hospitals of Al Mizhar, Al Muhaisnah and Nadd Al Hamar districts in Dubai will see Averda's ‘men in blue' at work as part of a new waste management contract award by Dubai Municipality. They will be cleaning their streets, collecting their waste, recycling their unwanted electronic items and emptying their bins for the next five years.
Two of the most important services to be provided by Averda under the new contract to the residents, public buildings and businesses in the area, are represented by the door-to-door waste and recyclables collection, providing the 31,000 residents, 100 public schools, a public university and 3 healthcare centres in these districts with an immediate and readily available opportunity to recycle the waste generated.
With an average number of 5 persons per household in the districts served, covering almost 6,200 private villas and a total area of 24 sq kms, the recycling activities provided by Averda under this new contract will also cover electronic waste. Having already spearheaded significant e-waste collection and disposal campaigns in Dubai — the last one only 2 months ago in partnership with Uber Dubai — Averda and the Municipality of Dubai estimate that the total e-waste collected from Al Mizhar, Al Muhaisnah and Nadd Al Hamar districts could be significant, thus diverting it from a permanent landfill disposal.
Other new key beneficial aspects for the residents and businesses in these areas regarding the services that will be provided to them by Averda are: cleaning the streets 24 hrs/ day, 7 days/week; constantly collecting the general waste and the recycling materials. Once collected, all recyclables will be transported to Dubai Municipality's facilities, for further sorting and disposal. These new services will be provided by a workforce of 125 people and a fleet of 21 specialised vehicles.
Oussama Natour, Averda's managing director for UAE, said: "We are extremely proud of this new contract win and, equally, extremely pleased that we shall be providing the residents, businesses and public buildings in Al Mizhar, Al Muhaisnah and Nadd Al Hamar with our internationally recognized and bespoke waste management services. We believe our close partnership with Dubai Municipality will lead to a further increase in the quantity of waste to be recycled, as opposed to landfilled, and that the residents of the newly serviced areas will be able to see an immediate improvement in the level of services they are being provided with."
