Want to learn the Japanese language? Want to learn the Japanese art of flower arrangement (Ikebana)? Prince Sultan University's College for Women in collaboration with the Japanese Embassy in Riyadh is offering workshops for beginners. The language program will be offered from Feb. 5 to March 11 on Sundays and Tuesdays from 6:00 P.M. to 7:30 P.M., It costs SR800. The Ikebana workshop will be offered from Feb. 20 to March 12 on Mondays from 6:00 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. It will cost SR1100, inclusive of supplies. The last date for registration is January 30. Ikebana, which literally means flowers kept alive, is an appealing but a complex art. There are many schools, of which the most popular are Ikenobo, Sogetsu and Ohara. There are also different styles, depending on the school and the plants and vase used. Language class participants are required to complete 70 percent of the program. Certificate will be awarded once the participant passes an exam. Ikebana flower arrangement class students will receive the supplies, their flower arrangements and certificate after the completion of the program. Dar Al-Hekma College for Women in Jeddah is already running Japanese language and culture courses in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan. The courses, which began on Dec. 20, 2011, will continue till Feb. 1, 2012.
