SOME people love to volunteer and help other human beings in need. Nora, whose family name I am not going to mention here at her request, is one of those people. Together with her late husband, she came up with the creative idea to feed the poor in Riyadh and use the food left over from huge parties held by the wealthy. She established a small foundation for this purpose and started contacting wedding halls, hotels and palaces. She explained to people the idea behind the foundation and asked them not to throw the leftovers of banquets away. They welcomed her idea. She keeps the leftovers in clean dishes and ensures that the food is edible. She then distributes to the poor and needy in Riyadh. When I asked her whether they could find poor people late at night who were willing to accept her charity as most of them, I thought, would be asleep, this is what she said: "The poor do not go to bed and always want something to eat." The foundation is funded by individuals who love to help and volunteer and is run by many employees. Where are the other foundations and charities? Why do they not follow suit and hand out free grocery coupons to the poor? Where are our businessmen? Why are they not helping out financially?
