Some students and eyewitnesses said that another driver caused the accident and fled. However, Col. Muhammad Al-Qahtani, Director of Jeddah Traffic, said the accident happened because the driver was speeding. The car careened off the street, he said. Five of the injured were taken to Al-Mustaqbal Hospital, while the other six were whisked away by Red Crescent ambulances to King Abdulaziz University Hospital. Dr. Ibrahim, ICU specialist at Al-Mustaqbal Hospital, said the emergency unit admitted five students, two in critical condition, as they sustained concussions. Ahmad Abdul Rab, an injured student, said: “While I was sitting in the backseat going over my science books, suddenly I heard the driver shout. A car came in our direction and then we hit a concrete block. I don't remember anything after that. When I regained my senses I was in the hospital.” Abdul Rab Bamahmoud, father of the hospitalized student, said that the driver of the car that swayed into them escaped. “He should've helped our children and take them to hospital instead of fleeing.” Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education has approved its education administrations signing contracts with independent transport establishments to transport students. The decision came following the failure of transport establishments to comply with school transport regulations and the conditions in place. The ministry required drivers to submit documents, which prove that they are healthy, have a valid driver's license and are between 22 and 60 years old. __
