Illiteracy rate in the Kingdom has dropped by13 percent over the last two years, said Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Barak, Undersecretary of Boys' Education at the Ministry of Education. It fell by 6.7 percent for males and 19.4 percent for females. Inaugurating the Illiteracy Arab Day in Dammam, Saturday, Dr. Al-Barak said these efforts and achievements have been lauded by regional and international organizations. “More efforts should be exerted and intensified and various programs should be offered in the future for adult students. The programs should develop life skills for all individuals and satisfy their needs.” Al-Barak also called for more workshops to raise awareness about the importance of education and the negative effects of illiteracy on society. Ajlan Bin Saleh Al-Sael, director of adult education, said illiteracy programs in the Kingdom will continue implementing the same policy with two new subjects, life skills and computers, that will be introduced in all adult schools. __
