A leading Saudi official of the Arab League (AL) and the Human Rights Commission in the Kingdom says that AL observers in Syria are carrying out their humanitarian work in a professional and effective manner. Dr. Hadi Ali Muhammad Al-Yami, who was also recently appointed as Deputy Chairman of the Arab Human Rights Committee, denied accusations that the committee has not been able to carry out its mandate, which includes monitoring events on the ground. He made the comments during his first interview since being appointed. Al-Yami, who holds a doctorate degree in international law, lauded the cooperation of all parties. He said all reports will be gathered into one document which will be referred to the Arab Ministerial Committee. Al-Yami said he has drafted a plan on tackling human rights abuses in the Arab world. He said his committee is working with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on tackling rights violations. Al-Yami rejected accusations from certain quarters that Arab countries have the highest rate of human rights abuses in the world. He said this was a relative matter and needed careful study before any conclusions are reached. Al-Yami said there was a great deal of human rights activity in the Kingdom. This was a natural extension of the Kingdom's stature and its reputation regionally and internationally. Al-Yami was born in 1965 and has three sons and two daughters. __
