Pakistan relations The US State Department was reported to have criticized Pakistan over the trial of its ambassador to Washington Husain Haqqani. Media reports said the State Department was demanding a fair trial for Haqqani and that it is closely watching the legal proceedings. Three top American senators, who recently visited Pakistan, have also expressed their concern over the alleged mistreatment of Haqqani and have urged Pakistani authorities to resolve the case under a civilian rule of law. The Pakistani people are astonished to see the double standard which the US has practiced since the start of its war on terror in Pakistan in which thousands of people have been killed or have gone missing. Unfortunately, instead of establishing good relations with the Pakistani people, the US has a history of supporting controversial figures. It has challenged the Pakistani judiciary over the case of US Embassy staff Raymund Davis who killed two Pakistanis. It is supporting former Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf who now wants to return to the country. After the killing of 24 Pakistani soldiers by US drone strikes, Pakistan and US relations have gone from bad to worse. Pakistan has said that it will review its role in the US-led war on terror. The US support for controversial personalities will further harm relations between the two countries. Khawaja Umer Farooq, Jeddah __
