The 125th Birth Anniversary of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian Constitution as chairman of the Constituent Assembly, was celebrated by the Consulate General of India at the Consulate premises here. The officials and staff of the Consulate as well as teachers and students of the International Indian School, Jeddah, participated in the function during which major achievements of the legendary leader, who is also known as champion of the downtrodden people in the country, were elaborated. A documentary film portraying immense significance of the Indian Constitution and the role played by Dr. Ambedkar in crafting it was also screened during the function. Dr. Ambedkar (April 14, 1891–Dec. 6 1956), also popularly known as Babasaheb, was also a jurist, economist, politician and social reformer who inspired the Dalit Buddhist movement and campaigned against social discrimination against untouchables (Dalits), besides supporting the rights of women and labor. He also served as the first Law Minister of independent India besides helping in establishment of the Reserve Bank of India in 1935 taking advantage of his exposures as an economist trained at the London School of Economics. A Google Doodle was published for Ambedkar's 124th birthday and his birthday (Jayanti) has become so important in India that Dr. Ambedkar topped on Google Search and Twitter Trends on April 14, 2015. In 2016, Dr. Ambedkar's Jayanti is also being celebrated at United Nations. — SG
