Saudi Gazette Serving the community teaches children responsibility not only for themselves, but also for other people.Children are the building blocks of a society and if we teach them from a young age the importance of community service, we can ensure a future in which non-profit and charitable organizations will flourish. The elementary school in Hafuf, Al-Anjal National Schools, participated with the municipality of Al-Ahsa region to organize a winter clothes drive for the sanitation workers of the city, who withstand the bitter cold and long working hours. Over 50 little pre-school children from Al-Anjal National Schools handed out thick winter clothes and nutritious meals to the janitors. The distribution campaign was supervised by representatives from the municipality, teachers and administrators of the school who named their campaign ‘ Little Volunteer with a Big Heart.' The supervisor of the campaign, Nawal Al-Afaleq said, “The goal of this campaign is to promote volunteering in our society and to encourage more people to spend their time, energy, and money in providing assistance to those in need. The campaign really brought out the innate good in children and their love of helping others.” Such activities enable children to first -hand experience of making someone happy and feel happy, too, by giving something. The school is planning a number of community service trips and projects that require participation from students and their mothers. The little ones next trip was to a children's hospital, where they distributed “Get Well Soon” cards, toys, and sweets; the children themselves packed the gifts. Students and their families have also been gathering installing first aid kits in public places, such as playgrounds and malls, to be used by anyone in case of minor injuries. The public relations manager of Al-Ahsa municipality, Badr Bin Fahd Al-Shehab, said that over 60 sanitation workers benefited from the first day of the volunteering campaign. The campaign will continue to work for a long period in order to reach out to all the workers.
