Jeff Carter took a bit of a gamble and it paid off for the Los Angeles Kings Tuesday night. Carter scored 40 seconds into overtime after Kris Versteeg tied it with 35.1 seconds left in the third period to help Los Angeles beat the Calgary Flames 5-4. Carter stole the puck from Flames' forward Sean Monahan at the Calgary blue line and then skated the length of the ice before tucking a shot through goalie Joni Ortio's legs. "I think he fumbled the puck and I just jumped on it," said Carter, whose Kings will finish out the season with games at home against the Anaheim Ducks Thursday and the Winnipeg Jets Saturday. "It's one of those plays where I made a read and either it's going to work out or they're going back 3-on-2 on our net. Luckily it did. Not our greatest game, but this time of year we'll take two points and a win and go back home and try to finish out the season strong." Milan Lucic had two goals for the Kings, and Andy Andreoff also scored. Anze Kopitar had two assists and Jhonas Enroth made 19 saves. Los Angeles tied a franchise record with its 46th victory this season. Islanders 4, Capitals 3 (OT): Thomas Hickey scored with 2:47 left in overtime, Christopher Gibson made 29 saves in his first NHL start and the New York Islanders clinched a playoff berth with a 4-3 win over the Washington Capitals. New York rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the third period to force overtime. Alex Ovechkin scored twice for Washington and T.J. Oshie added a goal and two assists. Jets 2, Ducks 1 (OT): Blake Wheeler scored his 24th goal in overtime as the Winnipeg Jets rallied for a 2-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks in front of 16,743 at the Honda Center. Marko Dano added his fifth goal and goalie Michael Hutchinson stopped 27 shots for the Jets (33-39-8), who earned their second consecutive victory. Penguins 5, Senators 3: Two third-period goals by Carl Hagelin helped Pittsburgh erase an early 3-0 deficit en route to a victory over Ottawa. Sidney Crosby also scored twice for the Penguins, the second into an empty net with 6.3 seconds left, and Patric Hornqvist had the other. Erik Karlsson, Mike Hoffman and Zack Smith had the Senators goals. Rangers 3, Lightning 2: Derek Stepan scored twice and Henrik Lundqvist stopped 39 shots as New York overcame a horrendous start to defeat Tampa Bay at Madison Square Garden. Chris Kreider scored on a breakaway 4:46 into the third period for the Rangers' winner. Andrej Sustr and Brian Boyle scored for the Lightning, who received 25 saves from Andrei Vasilevskiy. Hurricanes 2, Bruins 1 (SO): Noah Hanifin beat Tuukka Rask with the only goal of a five-round shootout to give Carolina a win over Boston, which is in danger of missing the playoffs. With the point, the Bruins pulled into a tie with the idle Detroit Red Wings for third place in the Atlantic Division, but the Red Wings, who visit Boston on Thursday night, have a game in hand. Other results: Panthers 4, Canadiens 1; Sharks 3, Wild 0; Predators 4, Avalanche 3; Blackhawks 6, Coyotes 2; Sabres 3, Devils 1.
