Ribery keeps Bayern on course
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 03 - 04 - 2016

Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery scored a sensational volley to lead the German champion to a 1-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt Saturday that sent it eight points clear at the top of the Bundesliga with six matches left.
Frenchman Ribery, who has missed most of the season due to injury, took off at the edge of the box and sent his mid-air volley past Lukas Hradecky in the 20th minute after the keeper had initially saved a shot from Mario Goetze.
It was the 32-year-old's second goal of the campaign after being sidelined for eight months with an ankle problem and then suffering another injury that kept him out until last month.
Bayern found no resistance from Eintracht and Xabi Alonso rattled the crossbar with a free kick early in the second half with the hosts enjoying close to 70 percent possession.
The treble-chasing Bavarians, who face Benfica in the Champions League quarterfinals next week, are on 72 points with Borussia Dortmund, which hosts Werder Bremen later Saturday, on 64.
Schalke 04 failed to climb back into Champions League contention, suffering a 3-0 loss at promoted Ingolstadt to drop to sixth on 44 points.
Argentine Pablo de Blasis struck twice as Mainz 05 battled past Augsburg 4-2 to reclaim fifth spot, ahead of Schalke on goal difference.
Hamburg SV took a big step toward securing its top- flight status, crushing bottom-placed Hanover 96 3-0 with all three goals scored in the second half to move them into 10th place on 34, seven points above the relegation zone.
Atletico closes gap on Barca
Antoine Griezmann struck twice as Atletico Madrid moved to within six points of Barcelona at the top of La Liga with a comprehensive 5-1 win over Real Betis Saturday.
Barca host Real Madrid in what is set to be an emotional Clasico later as the Catalan giants pay homage to legendary former player and coach Johan Cruyff, who died last week at the age of 68.
Atletico and Barca also meet at the Camp Nou in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal Tuesday and Diego Simeone's men will travel with plenty of confidence after one of their most complete performances of the season.
Ibrahimovic scores hat trick
Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored a hat trick to take his tally to 30 French league goals as Paris Saint-Germain warmed up for its Champions League match against Manchester City with a convincing 4-1 win over Nice Saturday.
Having already secured a fourth consecutive league title, PSG hosts City Wednesday in the first leg of their quarterfinal.
Ibrahimovic, the league top-scorer, put PSG ahead from David Luiz's assist. He gave the host a 2-1 lead from a direct free kick after Hatem Ben Arfa leveled the score with a superb solo goal.
Luiz made it 3-1 after the interval, and Ibrahimovic sealed the win eight minutes from time with a clean finish.
PSG increased its lead over Monaco to 25 points.
