Why do Saudis have unnecessary plastic surgery?
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 19 - 03 - 2016

In 2005, the perfume market in the Kingdom was worth SR5 billion. No doubt this figure increased between 2005 and 2016 and I believe that the increase could be in double digits. Women, especially, love fashion, makeup and perfume, and often want to keep up with the latest fashions and new brands. Saudi women are no exception. In fact, they spend huge amounts of money on fashion and makeup. Of course, there are also women who do not bother to keep up with the latest fashions.
I am not criticizing women who want to be fashionable. All I am saying is that women should not let their love for fashion control them and make them spend large amounts of money.
Lately, the number of women undergoing plastic surgery for breast implants, liposuction and lip augmentation has been on the rise. We have also noticed an increase in the number of rhinoplasty and otoplasty procedures. Of course, some of these surgical procedures are necessary, especially for those who have deformities.
However, unfortunately, the majority of women who go under the knife do not suffer from deformities or problems with their appearance. They just want to imitate Arab and Western fashion icons and celebrities. We, Saudi men, want our women to be the most beautiful women in the world, but at the same time we do not want them to jeopardize their lives by undergoing unnecessary operations that might result in tragic consequences.
Today, many young men and even older ones undergo rhinoplasty procedures and hair transplantation because they mistakenly think that women look for men with beautiful noses and hair who look like athletes, whereas what women actually look for in a man is love, passion, security and comfort.
My advice to women and men who do not need to undergo plastic surgery is not to do it. They should act their age. My advice to parents is to teach their children to accept their bodies as they are and not to undergo such procedures unless it is for a medical reason.
