AS much as I was made happy by the efforts of a number of welfare societies to take the surplus food left over from big feasts and social occasions to the poor and hungry people, I was saddened that the efforts of these societies are not enough to cover all food residues. I become more sad when I look at the huge amounts of food wasted in hospitals. The food leftovers are much more than the eaten quantities. The hospitals are only equaled in this regard by the military colleges and other organizations that depend on food suppliers for their meals. The suppliers are keen to provide large quantities of ready-made meals to increase their income without being concerned about the surplus and waste. This is a very serious matter. I think the government should step in to correct the situation. One of the remedies is to make it a commitment on the food supplier to deliver the surplus food to the poor and needy. The government's remedies may culminate in the establishment of a large charitable society whose sole work will be to look for the food leftovers and deliver them to the hungry people. The recycling of surplus food to feed the hungry mouth is a good deed, which will be rewarded by Allah. And leaving the surplus food to rot in the garbage is a sin.
