Eichel scores twice in Sabres' win
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 28 - 01 - 2016

Jack Eichel's impressive rookie season continued on Tuesday night.
Eichel scored twice to erase a one-goal deficit, Robin Lehner made 34 saves in his first victory this season and the Buffalo Sabres came back to beat the Ottawa Senators 3-2.
Eichel tied it 2-2 with 6:12 left in the second period, then got the winner 1:08 into the third to help the Sabres end a three-game slide.
"It's big to get a win like that," said Eichel, who moved to within a goal of NHL rookie goal leader Artemi Panarin with his 15th and 16th of the year. "We came back twice and we were able to lock it down in the third. That's what good teams do."
On his second goal, Eichel charged the net after a chip shot by Zemgus Girgensons but stopped on the goal line. When goalie Craig Anderson couldn't control the rebound, Eichel was able to slide the puck into the open net for the deciding goal.
Lehner's play was crucial late when the Senators outshot the Sabres 22-2 in the third period. Lehner was traded to Buffalo last summer after six seasons in the Ottawa organization. Evander Kane had the other goal for Buffalo.
Erik Karlsson and Bobby Ryan scored for the Senators, and Anderson stopped 19-of-22 shots.
Jean-Gabriel Pageau thought he had tied the game in the final moments of the third, but a review showed time had expired.
"It's unfortunate and I wish we would have had one more second on the clock, but that's the game," Pageau said.
Penguins 2, Devils 0: Sidney Crosby and Phil Kessel scored goals, Marc-Andre Fleury made a succession of strong saves during his 42nd career shutout and the Pittsburgh Penguins moved into the NHL All Star break with a 2-0 win over the New Jersey Devils.
The Penguins won their third in a row and fourth in five games — and improved to 9-3-4 in their last 16 games — while halting the Devils' attempt to win five consecutive games for the first time in nearly three years.
Ducks 6, Bruins 2: The Anaheim Ducks spotted Boston a goal in the first minute before scoring four straight against two goaltenders en route to a 6-2 victory over the Bruins.
Boston netminder Jonas Gustavsson left the game after the first period because of illness and the team said he had been taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for observation.
Panthers 5, Maple Leafs 1: Aleksander Barkov signed a $35.4 million contract extension and scored a power-play goal all on the same day, leading the Florida Panthers to a 5-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs at the BB&T Center.
The 20-year-old, who got a six-year deal, scored his 13th goal of the season, tying the score 1-1. As it turned out, it was the first of five consecutive goals for Florida.
Hurricanes 5, Blackhawks 0: Riley Nash scored twice as the Carolina Hurricanes blanked the Chicago Blackhawks 5-0 at PNC Arena.
The Hurricanes put up five goals for the second game in a row, winning for the third time in four prior to the All Star break.
Jeff Skinner, John-Michael Liles and Joakim Nordstrom also scored for Carolina (23-20-8), while goalie Eddie Lack made 26 saves for the shutout.
Jets 5, Coyotes 2: Nikolaj Ehlers scored a hat-trick and Dustin Byfuglien notched two goals of his own as the Winnipeg Jets dispatched the Arizona Coyotes 5-2 at MTS Centre.
Ehlers scored two goals 6:58 apart in the first period and another in the second, while Byfuglien scored twice in the second period as the Jets (22-24-3) snapped a three-game skid.
Other results: Blue Jackets 5, Canadiens 2; Predators 2, Canucks 1; Sharks 6, Avalanche 1.
