Spurs, Liverpool advance
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 22 - 01 - 2016

Son Heung-min's thunderous finish helped Tottenham Hotspur secure a 2-0 victory at Leicester City and Liverpool eased past fourth-tier Exeter City 3-0 in FA Cup third-round replays Wednesday.
Son, who rifled home the opening goal after 39 minutes, set up Nacer Chadli for the second with a beautiful pass in the second half as the eight-time Cup winner eased through against surprise Premier League high-flyer Leicester.
Liverpool scored early through Joe Allen, but then made heavy weather of its lower league opponent and did not add to its lead until substitute Sheyi Ojo curled home superbly.
Joao Teixeira rounded off a comfortable victory for Juergen Klopp's side with a neat near-post finish eight minutes from time.
After the first meeting between Tottenham and Leicester had ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw and with both teams harboring hopes of challenging for the Premier League title, their managers showed where the FA Cup ranks in their priorities.
Both made a raft of changes to the sides they fielded at the weekend and left out their principal attacking weapons, with Jamie Vardy warming the Leicester bench for most of the match and Harry Kane starting on the sidelines for Spurs.
Spurs travels to third-tier Colchester United in the fourth round and Liverpool hosts Premier League rival West Ham United.
Monaco, Lyon and Marseille move up
Five-time winner Monaco was pushed to extra time before securing its spot in the round of 16 of the French Cup with a 3-1 win over second-tier Evian Wednesday.
Playing with a reshuffled but strong team featuring Ricardo Carvalho, Joao Moutinho and Bernardo Silva, Monaco looked fragile throughout and failed to extend its lead following Lacina Traore's opener in the 45th minute with a header from close range.
Former Monaco midfielder Morgan Kamin pulled the teams level in the 63rd minute with a powerful strike as Evian created the second half's best chances. But Mario Pasalic converted a good cross from Moutinho to put the visitors back in command in the 104th. Helder Costa then sealed Monaco's win from substitute Ilyes Chaibi's assist.
Lyon defeated third-division side Chambly 2-0 with goals from Maxwell Cornet and Mathieu Valbuena on a bad pitch that had been damaged by frost. Valbuena, who has been struggling for form for most of the season, scored his first goal since October last year.
Fourth-division Trelissac produced the shock result of the evening with a 4-2 victory over Lille on penalties after the teams drew 1-1.
Among other top-division teams to advance were 10-time winner Marseille, Troyes, Lorient and Nantes. Marseille beat fellow first-division team Montpellier 2-0 to secure a first home win at the Velodrome since November. Title-holder Paris Saint-Germain advanced to the next round Tuesday with a 2-1 win over Toulouse.
