Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard scored four minutes into stoppage time to cap a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over Middlesbrough at Anfield that gives his side maximum points after two rounds. A header by substitute Michael Owen earned Newcastle United a 1-0 home win over Bolton Wanderers in his first game of the season while Tottenham Hotspur went down to a shock 2-1 home defeat by Sunderland, debutant Djibril Cisse netting the winner. Fulham, which lost 2-1 at promoted Hull City on the opening day of the season, felt its surprise victory proved it is worthy of remaining among the elite. Middlesbrough substitute Mido, who netted in its 2-1 victory over his former club Spurs last weekend, put ‘Boro ahead with a long-range strike 20 minutes from time on Merseyside. Liverpool kept its fans on tenterhooks until Jamie Carragher's shot was deflected by Middlesbrough defender Emanuel Pogatetz into his own net in the 86th minute. Gerrard then produced a late angled strike to earn the home side a dramatic last-gasp victory. Former Liverpool striker Cisse, who has joined Sunderland on loan from Olympique Marseille, sent ambitious Tottenham slumping to their second successive defeat when he nodded the winner from Daryl Murphy's left-wing cross in the 82nd minute. Sunderland had gone ahead at White Hart Lane with a brilliant 25-meter drive from Kieran Richardson before Spurs equalized through Jermaine Jenas in the 73rd. Bayern salvages draw Newcomer Hoffenheim took sole possession of the lead in the Bundesliga when it won its home debut Saturday and defending champion Bayern Munich rallied with 10 men to salvage a 1-1 draw at Borussia Dortmund. Another featured match, between last season's runner-up Werder Bremen and No. 3 Schalke, also ended in a 1-1 draw. Hamburger SV won and joined Schalke, Dortmund and Hertha Berlin in a four-way tie on four points. But the top belonged to Hoffenheim, which played before a crowd of 26,000 in Mannheim, nearly eight times the population of its home town, and beat another promoted team, Borussia Moenchengladbach, 1-0 on Vedad Ibisevic's league-high third goal of the season. Hoffenheim is now a perfect 2-0 and has six points, although it could be joined by Wolfsburg after it plays Sunday in Bochum. Lyon blanks Grenoble Defending champion Lyon beat Grenoble 2-0 Saturday with goals from Jean Makoun and Karim Benzema to share the lead in the French league with Marseille. Marseille edged Le Havre 1-0 with a 20-meter free kick from Dutch winger Boudewijn Zenden in the 56th. Both Marseille and Lyon have seven points after three rounds. Promoted top-flight clubs Chievo and Lecce were also eliminated. Chievo lost 2-1 at home to third division Padova while Lecce slipped to a 1-0 home defeat by Serie B Salernitana. Goran Pandev's double helped Lazio hammer Benevento 5-1 and Serie A rivals Atalanta, Bologna, Cagliari, Catania, Reggina, Siena and Torino also reached the two-legged fourth round which takes place in September and October.
