Curated by Sheikha Hoor Al Qasimi, President and Director of the Sharjah Art Foundation, 1980 – Today: Exhibitions in the United Arab Emirates was a retrospective on contemporary art exhibitions in the Emirates over the last 40 years. Through an unprecedented grouping of over 100 works, Sheikha Hoor structured the exhibition to create dialogues between artists and across practices, highlighting the diversity and the history of the art scene in the UAE. The exhibition featured work by fifteen Emirati artists: Ahmed Al Ansari, Moosa Al Halyan, Mohammed Al Qassab, Abdul Qader Al Rais, Abdullah Al Saadi, Mohammed Abdullah Bulhiah, Salem Jawhar, Mohammed Kazem, Dr. Najat Meky, Abdulraheem Salim, Ahmed Sharif, Hassan Sharif, Obaid Suroor, Dr. Mohamed Yousif, and Abdulrahman Zainal. "For our fourth exhibition at the International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia we were delighted to have worked with curator Sheikha Hoor Al Qasimi," said Sheikha Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan, Founder of the Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation and the Commissioner of the National Pavilion UAE. "Thanks to her vision we were able to share essential works from this key period in the UAE's art scene as well as to build links for future generations. I applaud her contributions to the development and advancement of the larger discourse on art from the region." Sheikha Hoor Al Qasimi's research relied heavily on the public archives of the Emirates Fine Art Society (EFAS), a non-profit association formed in 1980 in Sharjah, which has long served as a galvanizing incubator for the UAE's art scene. The archives included a trove of English and Arabic books on visual arts, theatre and literature, as well as catalogs, photo albums and copies of Al Tashkeel, EFAS's quarterly newsletter, which has been published since the 1980s. The Art Gallery at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD Art Gallery) announced a major solo exhibition of work by internationally-renowned sculptor Diana Al-Hadid will open in March 2016. Al-Hadid's work transforms Renaissance and classical imagery into contemporary sculptural forms that appear to be decaying or resurfacing, often in a cascade of white, melting gypsum. Her towering sculptures, spectral wall pieces, and surreal bronzes will fill the 7,000 square foot gallery. The exhibition takes its title from a central work, Phantom Limb, a term referring to the sensations that a missing arm or leg is still present, and able to move. The title captures the character of much of Al-Hadid's work, which evokes memory and long cultural history through a visceral, materially-focused working technique. The theme of memory and its physical manifestations in art and architecture runs throughout Al-Hadid's work. The monumental sculpture of Phantom Limb is framed by two major wall insets: The Sleepwalker and Still Life. The first draws from the 4th Century BC bas-relief Gradiva, while the latter is a reworking of Hans Memling's 1475 painting Allegory of Chastity. This ensemble travels from the artist's recent show, The Fates, at the Secession Vienna. These "fates" anchor a series of related sculptures, alongside the world-premiere of an epic new triptych of wall panels. For these brightly colored, shimmering wall panels, Al-Hadid responds to the Renaissance triptych, Battle of San Romano by Paolo Uccello. Like Uccello, Al-Hadid experiments and expands the pictorial space in her panels, oscillating between painting and sculpture. Bollywood actor Govinda told the press on Tuesday that he would ‘let them know' if he would be apologizing for allegedly slapping a fan seven years ago, as asked by the Supreme Court. "I am waiting for the complete Supreme Court order," Govinda said. On Monday, the Supreme Court urged the 51-year-old actor to settle the dispute with Santosh Rai, who has accused Govinda of ‘slapping and intimidating' him in 2008. "You are a big hero, show your big heart," the Supreme Court told the actor, adding, "The actor does not need to do in real life what he does in reel life. We enjoy your films, but cannot tolerate you slapping somebody."
