JEDDAH — Several noted media anchors and journalists exhorted students and youngsters to inculcate the habit of reading. They were speaking to students of Jeddah International School (JIS) during 'reading week' event organized by the institution at its premises here that began on Sunday (Oct. 25). Speaking to Saudi Gazette, JIS activity coordinator Sara Succary said the 'reading week' is meant to encourage students in the French and English sections to read. "In the first hour we have session called silent reading. Everybody in the school including teachers and the administrative staff get a book and read it," she said. Silent reading sessions alter the attitude of some students toward reading since they are spending an hour at a book. So at the end they will read, she said. Teachers are extending all help to students in inculcating the habit of reading. Students are also enjoying lectures by the media big-wigs. Noted Saudi writer Heba Khashoggi encouraged young students to read. "She offered a small show by bringing one of the cartoon characters," Succary said. JIS has also registered in ‘Arab Reading Challenge' which started in UAEand was launched by Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. JIS currently has a small reading club that includes 100 students. The students have time till March to read around10 books each month and summarize them. The school is also encouraging students to read Arabic books as well to improve their Arabic language.
