Distinctive still life and landscape works by Ken Maycock, a graduate of the Slade, feature in the group show at the gallery. Ken, who lives in Pembrokeshire, was introduced to the gallery by Creative Coverage, which represents selected professional artists. "I took them some work last Friday and they instantly included three of my paintings in their new group exhibition," says a delighted Ken. "One of the paintings is Still Life with Onions, which is the featured painting on my Creative Coverage web page. They were unbelievably enthusiastic and have asked for much more work once I have had it framed. At the moment they have two still life paintings and one small landscape. The work which I will be taking them shortly is mainly landscape." www.kenmaycock.com Busy newly wed Scottish artist has much to be happy about Straight back from her honeymoon, Glasgow artist Cecilia Forrest has a new surname, Cardiff, and a host of exhibitions to look forward to on the run up to Christmas. Richard from West Sussex is in the seventh week of an eight week painting project in Cosenza, the historic coastal town. He is working on his last painting. His first three works have been mounted on walls of buildings in the old city. "Yesterday one of them was stolen," reveals Richard. "It must have been a very organised theft because the picture is a heavy fibreglass/plaster panel 3 x 2 metres that was bolted onto the wall three metres above ground level. It happened between 12.30pm and 1.15pm. The police are searching for it and it looks set to be featured in the Italian media." "This project sees five figurative artists each painting five pictures, which will collectively tell the story of the city of Cosenza. We are each to represent the various powers that ruled Southern Italy at different times, reflecting our own countries of origin: the native Bruzi (John Picking), the Normans (myself), the Swabians (Silvia Pecha), the house of Anjou (Alexandre Barbera Ivanoff) and the house of Aragon (Gregorio Dominguez Gonzales (‘Goyo')). So it is an international ensemble of artists. We have about 10 days for each painting, which because of the size of the panels and the complexity of the designs means rapid work. It is a considerable challenge so I have prepared thoroughly." The idea is to create an outdoor historical museum that will help locals to learn about and take pride in their own historical legacy and also encourage foreign tourists to visit Cosenza, to help boost the local economy. The paintings will complement and make reference to the city's architectural legacy - including a medieval hilltop castle and a fine cathedral. www.richardwhincop.co.uk Come and be bitten by the art bug in Transylvania An award winning Wiltshire artist decided to visit Transylvania after listening to Dracula while painting in her studio. Tanya Achilleos Lock from Trowbridge then discovered that she loved the country so much that she is now starting to take painting holidays, so she can share the beauty with others. "A Royal favourite, with stunning scenery, amazing light, friendly people and lovely weather, when I visit I stay with Secret Transylvania," she explains. "I have been so impressed by this company, which is Trip Advisor's Traveller of Choice that I have decided to partner with them to establish an art centre in Transylvania. Our first painting holidays start next May with beginner oil painting classes. Not only will students have time to spend focusing on oil painting using my method for realism art but there will also be a lot of time to gather reference, relax or go out and do plein air painting in their chosen medium." The cost is: £995 per student, and is fully inclusive. One artist felt so distraught that she had to put paintbrush to canvas and in doing so produced a magnificent portrait of him. Now, some of the proceeds from the sale of prints of this painting by Alexandra Churchill from Britain are going to the Born Free Foundation, which works to protect wildlife from such brutal acts. "Cecil was such a striking creature and his loss of life was a callous and thoughtless act," says Alexandra of the male Southwest African lion, who primarily lived in the Hwange National Park in Matabeleland North, Zimbabwe and was 13 years old when he was killed. Alexandra has now produced museum grade prints of her painting of Cecil, which she is selling for £50 plus postage and packaging on her website: www.alexandrachurchill.co.uk. Twenty per cent of the sale price is being donated to The Born Free Foundation, the international wildlife charity, founded in 1984 by the actors Bill Travers MBE and Virginia McKenna OBE, stars of the iconic film Born Free. Helen Usher of Born Free says: "We are delighted that Alexandra has produced this magnificent painting of Cecil. It is extremely kind of her to donate 20 per cent of proceeds of the sale of this print to Born Free, which will help us to continue our valuable work to stop suffering and keep wildlife in the wild, around the world." http://www.alexandrachurchill.co.uk/
