Mariam Nihal Saudi Gazette Delico (Delicious Food Company) started its first Italian restaurant managed by ‘'Trattoria Da Lallo" in September 1997 for members of the Italian Cultural Center. Over the years, Lallo became a familiar culinary destination for many families in Saudi Arabia. It is perhaps a tradition that feels closer to home for many living in the country. Even though Lallo is an example of authentic Italian, it serves a variety for those who are used to the multinational or American taste of Italy. This is not such a problem for their head Italian chef Salvatore Pirani. "We serve them what they like. But I feel like it is our duty to educate people and show them how Italian food really tastes. I experiment a lot. We don't use as much cream and other ingredients fast food joints use, I am here to show you the real taste of Napoli and other parts of Italy," he told Saudi Gazette. Lallo offers simplicity, in all its features. Be it the interiors or their food. Their new location in Jeddah gives it the exclusivity of being in the center of all the action yet being tucked away in a quiet corner. Weekends are usually full of families. The specials are brough in from Europe- Burrata cheese, fresh mussels and oysters. To begin, with try the shrimps avocado salad with slice of orange and fried calamari. For the main course, if you are a fan of risotto try the creamy version with mushrooms. It is not as heavy but a portion to big for one serving. Pasta is of course a must-try. Not just because of its roots in Italian cuisine but also because of its relationship with the brand. You have probably seen their pastas in supermarkets across the country. This started in 1999, when Delico set up their pasta factory, by importing all equipment, machinery and technical expertise from Italy to produce authentic Italian pasta in Saudi Arabia. They now produce more than 100 types of fresh flavored pastas. The Linguine Cartoccio pasta with seafood is spicy and tangy. It really is a safe bet and installs a craving instantly. Spaghetti bolognaise with meat sauce is light and a great first course option. The sauce is not too thick yet flavorful like it should be. Chicken Monti is served in a creamy sauce with cheese sliced on top. Again, a familiar and enjoyable healthy dish for most families. Desserts like the famous Italian Panna Cotta, home-made or at least feels like one- Tiramisu, strawberries galore in Mascarpone Mousse, Hot Chocolate Flan with ice cream for the kids are delectable items and worth the wait. However their scrumptious coffee crème brulee is a winner, one worth going back for, again and again.
