The Kingdom has submitted a draft resolution to the United Nations urging the world body's General Assembly to condemn Iran over its plot to assassinate Adel Al-Jubair, the Saudi Ambassador to the United States. The draft resolution is based on documented information submitted by the CIA and on international covenants which stipulate that diplomatic missions should not be attacked. Iran has not honored these covenants and has, instead, violated them. Apart from the failed assassination attempt, Iran has also tried to undermine the security of the Kingdom, Bahrain, Kuwait and other Arab countries. The draft resolution urged Iran “to comply with all its obligations under international laws ... and to cooperate with states to bring to justice all those who participated in the planning, organization and attempted execution of the plot to assassinate the (Saudi) ambassador”. The United Nations is expected to act favorably on the draft resolution in order to send a message to Iran that it cannot contravene international laws, which were signed by many countries who want peace to reign in the world. Over the past years, Iran has acted in a strange manner that does not conform to diplomatic norms. On Thursday, the six world major powers closed ranks behind the hard-hitting report of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) which stated that there is evidence that Iran has been making nuclear weapons in its power plants. Despite Tehran's assertion that its nuclear program is for peaceful use, Iran has upset many countries in the Middle East because it has been behaving like a bully that seems bent on destabilizing the region. Solid support by the UN for the Kingdom's draft resolution would sent a strong signal to Iran that it cannot boldly break laws at will and do so with impunity. Iran has accused Western countries of seeking world hegemony, but its actions suggest that it is seeking hegemony in the Middle East. Iran should shed its image as a bully and behave like a civilized nation. It should stop meddling in the internal affairs of its neighbors so that peace can reign in the region and the world. __
