Denny Stadium carried long into the cool Alabama night, echoing through just about every corner of this football-mad state. All anyone around here could talk about the past two weeks was the so-called Game of the Century, No. 1 Louisiana State against No. 2 Alabama. But poor quarterback play, sputtering offenses and no touchdowns helped undermine the hype that surrounded this matchup of the nation's top-ranked teams. The game may have lacked offensive art, but it had plenty of drama and defense as No. 1 LSU survived stretches of inconsistent play to escape with a 9-6 overtime victory. After No. 2 Alabama squandered its first overtime possession, LSU tailback Michael Ford burst around the left end for a 15-yard gain that set up a 25-yard field goal by Drew Alleman, ending the game in the most fitting manner and silencing the raucous crowd. Alabama brought its dominating defense but simply couldn't finish drives on its home field. Stanford 38 Oregon State 13: Fourth-ranked Stanford was wary of Oregon State, and a slow start against the Beavers on Saturday gave the Cardinal even more reason for concern. After a thrilling triple-overtime victory against USC and the big Pac-12 North contest looming against No. 6 Oregon next weekend, the lowly Beavers mounted a threat when they closed to within 17-13 in the third quarter. But then Stanford did what Stanford does, pulling away for a 38-13 victory on Saturday. No. 8 Arkansas 44 No. 10 South Carolina 28: Tyler Wilson threw for 299 yards and two touchdowns as No. 8 Arkansas held on for a win over No. 10 South Carolina. Arkansas (8-1, 4-1 Southeastern Conference) outgained the Gamecocks (7-2, 5-2) 435-207, but a pair of missed field goals and key dropped passes kept the Razorbacks from securing the win until late. Northwestern 28 No. 9 Nebraska 25: Second-string quarterback Kain Colter ran for two touchdowns and passed for another to lead Northwestern to an upset of No. 9 Nebraska. Iowa 24, No. 13 Michigan 16: Michigan's Denard Robinson had four shots at the potential game-tying touchdown with 16 seconds left and three yards to go. Michigan (7-2, 3-2) drove 79 yards to Iowa's 3-yard line on its final drive. But Robinson missed on four straight throws, with Iowa's B.J. Lowery breaking up Robinson's final toss to seal the win. Other results: No. 14 Houston 56, UAB 13; No. 15 Michigan State 31 Minnesota 24; No. 18 Georgia 63 New Mexico State 16; No. 19 Wisconsin 62 Purdue 17; UCLA 29 No. 20 Arizona State 28; No. 23 Cincinnati 26 Pittsburgh 23; Louisville 38 No. 24 West Virginia 35.
