The General Directorate of Traffic is scheduled to launch the third stage of the Saher System in Riyadh, Makkah, Madina and Jeddah next year, with the focus this time on vehicle security. This will include monitoring and detecting the whereabouts of stolen vehicles. Informed sources told Okaz/Saudi Gazette the third phase will see a greater crackdown on car thieves. A command center will be able to monitor and detect all stolen vehicles and motorbikes. The new phase of the system is being implemented in the four major cities because Saher was first introduced in these cities. According to the Riyadh traffic authority, Saher has helped solve several complicated cases of car theft, forgery, quarrels, car crashes, use of weapons, murder and escapes. Reports issued by the Saudi Red Crescent Authority, Ministry of Health and the Saher General Administration have unanimously agreed that the automated traffic monitoring system has effectively helped in reducing the number of traffic casualties by 31.4 percent. The number of traffic accidents dropped 11.2 percent, from 13,202 to 11,875, in the year following the implementation of the system. The officials in charge of the system said Saher has helped uncover several cases of forgery, where some motorists were wrongfully accused of committing traffic violations. It has also helped solve several criminal cases because police stations were given the photographs of vehicles involved in criminal activities. __
