Andy Roddick fought off a set point in the second set and held on for a 7-6 (3), 7-5 victory over Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov Tuesday to advance to the third round of the Shanghai Masters. Australian teenager Bernard Tomic came back from a set down to upset fifth-seeded Mardy Fish 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Roddick next plays seventh-seeded Nicolas Almagro of Spain, who defeated countryman Tommy Robredo, 7-5, 6-3. Almagro, who has won three titles this year, is trying to clinch one of the four remaining spots at the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London. The only seeded players to fall Tuesday were two Serbs – ninth-seeded Janko Tipsarevic and 11th-seeded Viktor Troicki. Tipsarevic lost to Spain's Feliciano Lopez 7-6 (2), 7-6 (3), his second straight first-round defeat after capturing his first ATP title in Kuala Lumpur last month. Troicki fell to 19-year-old qualifier Ryan Harrison of the United States, 6-3, 6-3. Another American, Alex Bogomolov Jr., downed Marcel Granollers 6-2, 6-3. Germany's Florian Mayer, seeded 15th, knocked out Argentina's David Nalbandian, 6-3, 6-4, in another second-round match. Nalbandian, a former Wimbledon finalist, has struggled since returning from a hamstring injury this summer. Milos Raonic of Canada came back to defeat Michael Llodra of France, 6-7 (2), 6-2, 7-6 (5). Austrian 14th seed Jurgen Melzer, who defeated Rafael Nadal to reach the quarter-finals in Shanghai last year, beat Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic 6-4, 6-2, and Alexandr Dolgopolov, seeded 12, beat Lukasz Kubot of Poland 6-4, 7-6 (8/6). Japan's Kei Nishikori overcame a disastrous start against Robin Haase to defeat the Dutchman 0-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7/5). Stosur prevails US Open champion Samantha Stosur could normally have more trouble pronouncing Noppawan Lertcheewakarn's name than beating the Thai world No. 168 on the tennis court. But Tuesday the Australian came perilously close to another first-round exit in Japan following her recent loss to Maria Kirilenko at the Pan Pacific Open, scraping through 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 in the Japan Open. Stosur's stumble against Kirilenko was her first match since winning her first career grand slam title in New York. Fourth seed Petra Cetkovska upset the locals by knocking out 41-year-old Kimiko Date-Krumm 6-2, 7-6.
